A little bit about us…
In 2011 a tornado ripped through the Northside of Minneapolis devastating hundreds of homes. The house that sat on the on the corner of 3500 Humboldt was destroyed beyond repair and removed. Left in it’s absence was open land. After two years a small group of neighbors came together, rented the plot from the City of Minneapolis for $1 and put the first plant in the ground. Since then, the garden has grown and changed to reflect the needs and desires of the community it serves. It continues to be a essential neighborhood resource where neighbors connect and have access to free food and medicine. The Story Garden is committed to growing connections between neighbors and the land.
We extend our deepest gratitude to long time supporters, The Folwell Neighborhood Association, Home Grown Minneapolis, MN Horticultural Society, and The Camden Lions. Your continual support has meant the world to us. You believe in the work we do and allow it to continually grow organically into the dynamic ecosystem it is today.
Free Little Pantry
This is a resource that will be built in 2025 to ensure that even when food is not readily available in the garden, we can still take care of one another through shelf stable food access.
Fire Pit/Community Space
The garden hosts dozens of events each year, but it’s also public land which is available to you! Contact us and reserve the space for a small group gathering.
Fruit Trees and Berries
The garden is proud to be home a variety of fruit trees including Plum, Cherry, and Apple. We also have a variety of berry bushes including Gooseberry, Chokecherry, Black Raspberry, Raspberry, Blueberry, and Service Berry.
Pollinator Garden
Pollinators are vital for healthy ecosystems and food security enabling the production of fruits, seeds, and crops. We are committed to planting organic flowers and grasses that help feed our essential pollinator friends.
Accessibility Grow Boxes
We strive to ensure that all neighbors have access to the garden and her resources. Two grow boxes will be installed in 2025 along the sidewalk for neighbors with mobility issues to make harvesting food accessible.
Vegetables, Herbs, and Compost
We are a diverse community and we represent that in the food we grow. You will also find a variety of culinary and medicinal herbs marked in the garden. Through our growing season, we are committed to composting to ensure nothing is wasted.
